Open mics are a wonderful opportunity to hear from other youth poets and expand your own understanding of the world.
Also, they are really fun!

Confidence. Connection. Creation.

Some of the pieces read:

By: Savi (10 years old)
Title: Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman was a slave
She was very brave
She ran away
Not at day
But at night
She wanted rights

She was the bright light in others’ lives
The opposite of strife
She fought
For the freedom she sought
In wars
And through open doors
The south
The north
The union
The confederacy
It seemed unfair
She was there

She was loved by all
And didn’t crawl into a small ball
And be filled with fear but bravery
Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery

Title: It Just Doesn't Fit

It just doesn’t fit.
We do our best but in the end,
The solution is an endless pit.
Puzzles seem fun when we open the box and sit.
They give us something to do, but this thinking will mend.
It just doesn’t fit.

We start by making a likeness of nature or even a banana split.
The colors begin to blend.
The solution is an endless pit.

We think that we can commit.
The piece, in a thousand places and positions, we extend.
It just doesn’t fit.

Now we feel it is time to admit.
We have to give up, our time is already overspent.
The solution is an endless pit.

A fist to the puzzle is what we want to emit.
The hope for it has diminished like a lost friend.
It just doesn’t fit.
The solution is an endless pit.
